ミュージカル「サウンド･オヴ・ミュージック」は1965年にブロードウェーで初演され、以後ミュージカルのスタンダードとして世界中で上演されている。マリア・フォン・トラップの自伝的作品 Trapp Family Singers が原作だが、ミュージカル化にあたっては換骨堕胎されて単純なストーリーになっている。シナリオはオスカー・ハマースタイン、曲はリチャード･ロジャース

この曲はオープニングシーンで歌われるもので、作品の題名がそのままタイトルになっている。The hills are alive といわれることもある。
