奇妙な果実：ビリー・ホリデイの歌

　　南部の木には変わった実がなる
　　葉には血、根にも血
　　黒い実が南の風に吹かれて揺れる
　　ポプラの枝にぶら下がった黒い果実

　　南国ののどかな景色
　　飛び出た目とゆがんだ口
　　甘く強烈な木蓮の香り
　　熟した実の饐えた匂い

　　カラスが来て実をついばむ
　　雨は滴り、風は舐める
　　実は腐って木から落ちる
　　風変わりな苦い果実

作詞者はアベル・メーロポルというユダヤ系のアメリカ人（ルイス・アレンはペンネーム）であったが、黒人の無念と白人暴力を読み込んだこの歌は、やがてアメリカのヒューマニズムの運動に大きな影響を及ぼすまでになる。

吊るされた人間たちの怨念が、社会を変える力になった例だといえる。

　　Then the sudden smell of burning flesh.

　　Here is fruit for the crows to pluck,
　　For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck,
　　For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop,
　　Here is a strange and bitter crop.
