テヴィエの娘ツァイテルとモーテルの結婚式を祝福する席で歌われる、このミュージカルを象徴するような歌だ。

テヴィエは若者たちがいつの間にか成長し、こうしてみなの祝福を受けながら結婚することを喜び、妻のゴルデもまた娘たちの門出を喜ぶ。だがその直後めでたいはずの結婚式にロシアの反ユダヤ主義者たちが攻撃を仕掛け、結婚式はめちゃくちゃにされる。

子どもの成長に眼を細める親の気持ちと、過酷な人生を生き抜く人間の強さを歌ったものとして、人の心をゆさぶってやまない歌だ。
